* My Family

I am Sri Lankan Burgher whose family emigrated to Australia in 1962.

I had my 10th birthday 3 weeks after arriving. Burghers are the descendants of the Dutch, Portuguese and French colonialists who intermarried with the Singhalese, Tamils, Moors (Muslims) and others living in Sri Lanka in the years of colonialism both before and after the arrival of the British.
It was the British who lumped us all together as Burghers to let us know our place in the Empire.
The family oral history on both sides is patchy and only extend a couple of generations back. What I have of it can be found at van Reyk stories and de la Harpe stories.
I have a complete family tree for the de la Harpe’s up to my mother’s generation.
I have a good family tree of the van Reyk’s on my father’s side from his grandfather to the children of my generation and our kids (and some of their kids, too).
Information on both of these is available on request.
If you have information on either families which you would like to share, I’d love to hear from you.

‘You can read about my kids and follow links to their pages via pondlings.’
